Visit Pensthorpe Nature Reserve

Take a relaxing walk around Pensthorpe Nature Reserve

If you are staying in one of our close-by Fakenham holiday cottages, we recommend you take a relaxing stroll around Pensthorpe Nature Reserve – a great way to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Pensthorpe Nature Reserve

Pensthorpe Nature Reserve is more than just a grassy field with some birds – it’s a must-visit destination for a fun-filled day out just outside of Fakenham. You can explore gardens, take a trail through their internationally recognised reserve, get up close to birds, enjoy a huge indoor play area, and roam around one of the region’s biggest outdoor adventure areas.

There’s no need to pre-book, you are more than welcome to turn up on the day. Pensthorpe is open throughout the year, so you can visit whenever you are in the area.

Pensthorpe covers 700 acres, with plenty of things to see around the park. Pensthorpe is home to Pensthorpe Conservation Trust, which started in 2003, and plays an important role in protecting the park and making sure the wildlife is supported.

Dedicated to Conservation

Pensthorpe Conservation Trust works in partnership with other organisations, and the captive breeding programmes have a big impact on the future of the local and national landscape.

In the past, they have had success with red squirrels and Eurasian Cranes helping to increase their numbers in the wild.

The site was created as a nature reserve by Bill Makins in the 1980s, before being bought by Bill and Deb Jordan in 2003. The uncovered finds during initial excavations to create the lakes include a hand axe believed to date from 8000 BC.

Pensthorpe Natural Park is ideally located close to Fakenham, and makes for a great day out for the entire family.

There is even more for the little ones to enjoy at Pensthorpe as well as looking at the wildlife. The Nature Reserve is also home to two play areas, WildRootz and Hootz House. Spanning just under two acres, with tunnels, slides, sandpits, a maze, tunnels and a zipline, WildRootz is the ultimate adventure playground for those that love to explore.  Hootz House is just as fun, but being indoors, it is also perfect to keep the little ones occupied if the British weather begins to turn. The nature themed indoor play area is home to rope bridges, slides and a dedicated soft play area for those under 3 so all can enjoy. Hootz House in particular can get very busy, so we would recommend booking a slot when you purchase your Pensthorpe ticket.

But the fun doesn’t stop there, throughout the year there are seasonal family friendly events that you should look out for! These are great and have previously been everything from Insect events, Pumpkins festivals, and Christmas markets.
