Whether you’re heading to the coast or tucking into the countryside, packing the right essentials is key to a stress-free getaway. Here’s our ultimate checklist of what we think you should remember for the perfect cottage holiday in Norfolk!
The Essentials for Everyone
- Comfy Clothes – As with anywhere in the UK, Norfolk’s weather can be a little unpredictable, so pack layers! Think cosy jumpers, comfy trousers, and a good jacket. Don’t forget your PJs for those lazy cottage mornings!
- Waterproof Jacket & Footwear – You’re bound to do a bit of exploring, whether it’s strolling through fields or along coastal paths. A waterproof jacket and some sturdy boots or wellies are a must for any weather!
- Local Maps or Walking Guides – Signal can be patchy in rural Norfolk, so it’s worth having some local walking guides or a map of the area handy if you plan on exploring.
- Binoculars – Norfolk is famous for its wildlife! From birds at the coast to seals at Blakeney Point, you’ll want to spot them up close.
- Torch – Especially useful for those late-night walks along the beach or if your cottage is in a more secluded spot. Many properties supply a torch, however it’s worth bringing one just in case.
- Essentials – Toilet rolls, extra tea towels and any particular kitchen utensils which you like to use for your favourite meals are recommend to bring along. - Toiletries – While most cottages provide basics like hand soap, it’s always good to bring your personal favourites (don’t forget your toothbrush and toothpaste!). Razors are often forgotten items to bring along.
- Laundry – Some houses provide washing tablets, however if you have your favourite brands then we recommend to bring your own.
Foods
- Food Basics – Think salt, pepper, cooking oil, stock cubes, sugar, tea and coffee, condiments and butter. It’s always worth checking what’s already at the cottage, but having a few basics packed won’t hurt. If you’re really organised then you may like to arrange a supermarket delivery for the evening of your arrival.
- Cling film and foil – Many properties supply these items, however it is as the discretion of the home owner and often gets left from previous guests. if you know you’ll be needed some cling film and foil for left overs and picnics then we advise you to bring it along just incase.
- Reusable Shopping Bags – All of our cottages self-catering, so you’ll likely be doing a food shop at some point. Bring reusable bags for the shops and save yourself from the 10p charge!
Christmas
- Christmas – All cottages are equipped with kitchen items, utensils, roasting dishes etc, however if you plan to make something for your family which requires anything particular then we advise you to bring this along.
- Decorations – Many owners supply decorations which will be put up prior to your stay, however not all. We advise guests to get in touch should they wish to know what will be provided.
If you’re bringing a dog
Norfolk is an incredibly dog-friendly destination, with loads of beaches, walking trails, and pubs that welcome your four-legged family member. Here’s what you’ll need to bring for your pup:
- Leads & Harnesses – Norfolk has plenty of off-lead areas, but make sure you have a good, sturdy lead and harness for those times you need to keep them close.
- Dog Towels – After a dip in the sea or a muddy walk, having a few towels handy will help keep the cottage (and your car!) clean.
- Collapsible Water Bowl – Ideal for when you’re out exploring the countryside or coastline.
- Dog Food & Treats – Pack enough food for your stay and maybe some extra treats for being such a good traveller!
- Bed or Blanket – Bring along something familiar from home to help your dog settle in.
- Poop Bags – Essential for cleaning up after your dog on walks, especially in protected nature reserves.
- Toys – A couple of your dog’s favourite toys will keep them entertained in the cottage or during downtime.
- ID Tag – Make sure your dog’s tag is up to date, especially if you’ll be exploring new areas where they might be tempted to run off!
