5 best kept hidden secrets escapes in north Norfolk

Like with everywhere, north Norfolk has plenty of well-kept secrets which tourists may not know about. In this blog we will be uncovering 5 of the best places you need to visit whilst holidaying here.

5 of the best hidden secrets in North Norfolk you need to know about

North Norfolk has 45 miles worth of coast and it is this coastline which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. Naturally there will be some beaches which are more popular than others, and likewise, some towns/villages are buzzing and busier than others. Whilst these areas are a must visit, there are many unexplored areas of Norfolk which are just as pretty and enjoyable. Here are our top 5 non-tourist destinations which we feel you should explore.

1. Paddle in the Glandford ford

This ford is one which is suitable to paddle in throughout the year. It's quiet, shallow and there's usually a place to park on the drive up to the water. It's located near Wiveton and just a mile off the main coastal road, so it's easily accessible and perfect for young children (although make sure they have some footwear as the stones can be a little sharp in places). There is a bridge which makes it an ideal 'poohsticks' destination for some hearty family fun. An ideal place to stop over during the summer months to cool off away from the crowds and in the gorgeous north Norfolk countryside.

2. Cycle around Kelling Heath

If you're bringing your bikes or fancy hiring some whilst you're staying in north Norfolk, then head over to the 5* Kelling Heath Park for some wonderful cycle paths which all loop back to the park village. There are routes for all abilities, lengths and various landmarks, sea views and terrain to choose from.

3. Baconsthorpe Castle

Baconsthorpe Castle can be found 3 miles east of Holt, well into the rural countryside of north Norfolk. It is the ruins of a 15th century manor house looked after by English Heritage. There are no amenities at the castle, which makes it the perfect place for a picnic with the family, especially on a warm summer's day. Dogs are welcome and there is parking on site for £2, unless you are an English Heritage member.

4. Stiffkey Freshes

Stiffkey is one of north Norfolk's prettiest linear villages, found along the coast road between Blakeney and Wells-Next-Sea. If you fancy somewhere wild, beachy, remote and usually quiet then Stiffkey Freshes is just where you need to adventure to from your Norfolk cottage by the sea. Adventure being the key word. Accessing Stiffkey Freshes can be done via a number of ways, the easiest ways are from the Stiffkey National Trust car park or the Morston National Trust car park. Stiffkey Freshes slots roughly in between the 2, so whilst it's a little walk it's safe and easy terrain to walk along. If you'd prefer a quicker route then you can park up in a small uneven layby on the north side of the A149 coast road near 2 farm buildings. From here you can find a pathway on the other side of the hedge until you reach the bridge. From here cross the road and you will find another marked footpath which will take you out to Stiffkey Freshes. It's worth the adventure, especially for the wildlife and bird watching.

5. Blakeney Point Paddle Boarding

If paddle boarding is your jam then you may be wondering where you can head with your board along the north Norfolk coast? The answer is MANY places, but our top tip would be to paddle out from Blakeney towards Blakeney point and rest up on the banks near to where the river Glavens fork towards Blakeney and Cley. The area has a great view looking back at the coast and villages, especially on a clear day. The key is to watch the tide times so you don't get stranded anywhere and end up having to drag your board back to the car. If you're parking at Blakeney you will also want to make sure the tide isn't expected to cover the car park, as this is a regular occurrence.
